What can I expect?
The Sant Pau Art Nouveau Site gives off a sense of tranquility, especially when one walks through the gardens. This was exactly what the architect, Lluís Domènech i Montaner, intended in his design. In 1905, he set forth to design a modern hospital where architectural artistry and natural beauty would create a healing environment. The hospital was used until 2009, and in 2014, the site re-opened as an open-air museum.
The site, which contains 16 pavilions, is the largest of its kind in the world. As you'll learn from your audio guide, these buildings have been painstakingly restored. Their standout features - mosaic art, colored tiles, and playful lines - are now on full display for visitors to appreciate. The buildings are connected by underground tunnels designed to transport the patients. All in all, the Sant Pau Art Nouveau Site is a one-of-a-kind attraction.
