What can I expect?
The Accademia Gallery is famous - so famous in fact, that the lines outside sometimes can stretch around the building. This is unsurprising given the reputation and caliber of the art inside. With these priority access tickets, you can spend your time admiring the art, rather than waiting in the line.
Accademia opened in the 1780's as a teaching facility for students at the Academy of Fine Arts. Today, the gallery is known as the home of Michelangelo's "David." This famous status, often cited as an ideal of the male figure, is over 16 feet tall. The statue is said to be a symbol of the Florentine Republic's struggle against its bigger rivals, just as the biblical David struggled against the giant Goliath.
There's more to see at the Accademia Gallery than the "David." Another piece by Michelangelo, "Slaves," depicts a group of captive figures enslaved in marble. Michelangelo didn't even get a chance to finish this work, but still, it's breathtaking. The gallery also features 15th century paintings by the artists Botticelli, Ghirlandaio, and Uccello, among others.
